Our blog was originally dedicated to saving the beloved Woodland Park Zoo, located in a legacy Olmsted Park, from the potentially ruinous financial, ecological and animal-trauma impacts of a massive 700-car parking garage. Thankfully, a city Hearing Examiner ruled the garage illegal. (More background in this three-year-old fight can be found here.) Although the garage appears dead, the non-profit corporation that now runs the zoo (under a 2002 agreement with the City of Seattle) wants to keep paving and building. We want the zoo to thrive but feel the so-called public-private partnership between the city and the Zoo needs to be re-examined in the wake of adverse events and trends since it was originally conceived nearly a decade ago.
